A conversion is only as useful as its definition
Page views, button clicks, form starts and completed inquiries are not interchangeable. When weak actions are promoted to primary conversions, advertising systems learn from noise.
The reverse also happens. Real calls or form submissions can exist without reaching the bidding platform at all. The dashboard looks configured while the algorithm operates half blind.
Warning signs
You do not need an advanced audit to spot every problem. Start with the obvious contradictions.
- Conversion value exactly matches conversion count, suggesting a default $1 value.
- Website forms are received, but analytics reports none.
- Multiple actions appear to count the same inquiry.
- Test events and old form platforms remain active.
- Reported revenue cannot be reconciled with accounting.
The correct sequence
Define the real business action. Confirm that the website records it. Confirm that analytics receives it. Confirm that advertising platforms receive it once. Then allow clean data to accumulate before setting targets.
Budget optimization comes after measurement integrity, not before it.
